RSCM Oxford Epiphany Festival
10 January 2015
Several adult choir members sang in a special festival of music and readings for Epiphany at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, with the Cathedral Choir and under the baton of Dr Stephen Darlington. The music was simple, but effective in the beautifully candlelit interior of this wonderful Cathedral. We were joined for one of the anthems by a group of young boys who had been attending the Christ Church “Be a Chorister for a day” experience.

‘Choir of the Week’

Hear us each day this week in the ‘Choir of the week’ feature on Clare Carter’s programme on BBC Radio Gloucestershire.
Dominic Cotter came to Choir Practice the previous Friday to record interviews with our choristers and also recorded us singing some Advent and Christmas music. Why not ‘listen again’ as the programmes will be available for four weeks.

Following on from our successful adult training sessions during the summer holiday (and not to be outdone by our young choristers!), three of our adults set themselves the challenge of taking their Deans and Bishops Awards. They have done extremely well and I am immensely proud of them all:

Diocesan Festival at Tewkesbury Abbey

Very many congratulations to Ben (Deans Award) and Abigail (Bishops Award) who were formally presented with their awards at the Diocesan Festival in Tewkesbury Abbey. Members of the choir went to support them and enjoyed an excellent day of singing, directed by Carleton Etherington, culminating in the special Choral Service where they were presented with their awards.

They will both be formally presented with their awards at the Diocesan Festival in Tewkesbury Abbey on Sat 18 October 2014.

Congratulations to Georgia who will remain Head Chorister and Holly who will remain St Lawrence Chorister (deputy Head Chorister) for a further year, following our annual vote.
Abi and Ben will also remain as Librarians, and not only are they very efficient and reliable, but they also take a very active part in leading the singing and helping junior choristers, setting a great example for all to follow.
Summer Activities
July and August 2014
During July Mrs P Scott (alto) attended the RSCM Residential Summer Course in Dunblane, Scotland. Charlotte H (HC 2010-2012) sang services in Gloucester Cathedral with the Millennium Youth Choir which included a live broadcast of BBC Sunday Worship and a recording of choral evensong to be broadcast later in October. Abigail (Lib) attended the RSCM Bath Residential Course, and had a fantastic time. You can read all about their experiences in the Chorister’s Voice section of the website. Perhaps it will inspire you to try one of the many RSCM courses and Cathedral breaks that are available.
Some of our adult members were also to be found bravely beavering away in the Church on Friday evenings receiving training in the RSCM Voice for Life Scheme, with a view to entering them for the Deans and Bishops Awards in the future. Well done to them all!

Patronal Festival, Choir Picnic and Rounders Match

Following an energetic rendition of O thou the central orb - Wood to celebrate our Patronal Festival, the fabulous weather allowed us to enjoy our annual Choir picnic in the grounds of the Primary School. This was followed by the annual rounders match, won this year by Decani. Player of the match was Ben for his strong bowling and excellent catches.
Choral Evensong at Gloucester Cathedral

The Choir, supported by members of our congregation thoroughly enjoyed singing Choral Evensong for Trinity Sunday in the magnificent acoustic of Gloucester Cathedral. We sang a variety of music, including Christ is our Cornerstone - Thorne, Psalm 93 and 150(Stanford), Brewer in D, Ayleward responses, Hymn to the Trinity - Tchaikovsky and the hymn ‘Bright the vision that delighted’. It was an amazing and uplifting experience singing in such a wonderful acoustic accompanied superbly by their magnificent organ. The choir sang superbly and the choristers were impeccably behaved. I was extremely proud of the choristers’ standard of singing and professionalism. We were made to feel very welcome and appreciated by the friendly clergy and hardworking vergers, and have been invited to make a return visit.

St Lawrence Choir was made very welcome at St Mary’s Church, Castle Eaton where they sang for a special team communion service to celebrate Ascension Day. We were treated to a delicious tea which was much appreciated by all.

I have introduced a new Chorister Award medal, that will be presented on a termly basis to the chorister that the Head Choristers and I feel most deserve it for their effort and achievement during that term. The recipient will wear the medal during services for the following term, and then be allowed to keep it.
The first and very deserving recipient of this award is Tia, who was presented with her medal at Choir Practice this evening. Congratulations!

Having demolished delicious burgers, hotdogs or huge slices of pizza, choristers warmed themselves by the bonfire and enjoyed a fantastic fireworks display in the magnificent grounds of Hatherop Castle School, whilst consuming sweets to give them energy for our rehearsal afterwards!

We gave Lottie (our excellent Head Chorister) a fine send off in a service devised by herself and packed full of music including Mendelssohn Hear my Prayer, Pie Jesu - Lloyd Webber, Walmisley in D Minor, Ps121 and Sanders. A short presentation and vote of thanks followed (accompanied by a glass of wine) where we enjoyed viewing pictures of her time as a chorister in a ‘This is your life’ style trip down memory lane.

Jubilee Thanksgiving Service

Thank you all so much for your splendid singing at our Jubilee Thanksgiving Service (which included music from the Coronation): Crown Imperial Coronation March - Walton, Jerusalem, Te Deum in B flat - Stanford, Psalm 121, All people that on earth do dwell - arr Vaughan Williams, O Taste and See - Vaughan Williams, The National Anthem, and a fantastic rendition of Zadok the Priest - Handel, not to mention much flag waving and singing of Land of Hope and Glory during the Recessional: Pomp and Circumstance March No 1 - Elgar. We were supported by a wonderfully large and enthusiastic congregation, and are very grateful to those who worked behind the scenes compiling and printing the commemorative order of service, advertising and hospitality. All together a truly memorable evening.

Chorister Outing to Gloucester Dry Ski Slope

Having sung beautifully at a wedding in Upton St Leonards, and enjoyed a picnic lunch in the sun at the village park, the choristers headed for the slopes for a fun afternoon skiing in the blazing sunshine. This was followed by some hilarious games back at Church Cottage (including a ferociously competitive game of hockey), and pizza and ice-cream. A fantastic time was had by all. Songs of Praise
08/09 & 17/18 November 2011
Members of St Lawrence Choir travelled to Cheltenham to attend rehearsals and recordings of two programmes of Songs of Praise which will be broadcast on 4th November 2011 and Palm Sunday 2012. The combined choirs were lead by David Ogden, and the organist was Cameron Luke (who played for us in Lechlade a couple of years ago). Ours were the only under 18’s at the event. They concentrated and sang out really well and were among the first to volunteer to sing one of David Ogden’s descants! Put the dates in your diaries and see if you can spot them on the television.

Lechlade Chorister wins place in Millennium Youth Choir

Very many congratulations to Charlotte, who following an audition with David Ogden has been offered the exciting opportunity of singing with the RSCM Millennium Youth Choir, the first chorister from St Lawrence to do so. This select Chamber Choir is open to singers between 16 and 23 years of age. Charlotte will have the opportunity of singing an exciting range of sacred music to a very high standard, making recordings, taking part in BBC broadcasts and public performances and attending residential weekends. We are very proud of her achievement.
RSCM Bath Residential Choral Course

Our two Head Choristers (Charlotte and Andrew) attended the Bath Residential Choral Course this summer, directed by Geoff Weaver. Both returned with glowing reports, having enjoyed the experience of singing in the school Chapel and Bath Abbey.
Llandaff Cathedral Visit
13/14 August 2011
The Choir, supported by members of our congregation enjoyed a wonderful weekend of singing, fun, friendship and fellowship in the magnificent Cathedral at Llandaff, whilst staying in the nearby University accommodation at Talybont. We sang a variety of music by Tallis, Stanford, Brewer, Darke and the famous anthem I was Glad -Parry. It was an amazing and uplifting experience singing in such a wonderful acoustic accompanied superbly by their magnificent Nicholson organ. Once again we were made to feel very welcome and appreciated by the friendly clergy, staff and congregation and have been invited to make a return visit.

Congratulations to Andrew for achieving 3 A-levels with two A* in Art and Textiles. He will be leaving us to study an Art and Design Foundation Course at Central St Martins College, University of Arts, London. Kathryn also achieved 3 A-Levels and has won a place at Trinity College of Music, London where she will be studying Music specialising in Oboe and Cor Anglais. A magnificent achievement. We all wish them both every success and look forward to them singing with us when they are in the area.
Annual Choir BBQ

A record number of choristers and their families attended the annual choir BBQ generously hosted once again by the Taylors. Despite the threat of rain, we sheltered from the brief showers beneath an array of gazebos, and enjoyed a delicious BBQ and amazing array of puddings which gave us the strength to sing I was Glad - Parry at our Patronal Festival that evening.

Diocesan Festival at Gloucester Cathedral

Members of the choir enjoyed an afternoon of singing music by Batten, Handel and Mendelssohn in a service celebrating the 400th Anniversary of the King James Bible. We proudly watched Luke and Pat (Gold Awards) and Charlotte and Andrew (Bishops Awards) receive their certificates from the Bishop of Gloucester, and Georgia was presented with her Deans Award by the Acting Dean of Gloucester Cathedral.

Our talented Choristers excelled themselves by baking an impressive array of delicious cakes and biscuits. Supported by our wonderful congregation, together we raised an impressive £215.70 for Comic Relief. A superb achievement. Thank you all for your support.

Eight choristers (including two altos and two tenors) thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon workshop at Dean Close School, culminating in a performance of this beautiful mass. The workshop was directed by Ben Nicholas with his usual good humour and encouragement, and we were accompanied by Carleton Etherington (organ). The two soloists were inspirational, and a great time was had by all.

They are both Bishops Award choristers, and richly deserve being chosen to hold these positions of responsibility.
Chorister Leavers’ Service

We gave this year’s Leavers (Luke, Laura and Sian) a fine send off in a service devised by the choristers themselves and packed full of music by Tallis, Purcell, Sanders and Faure. A short presentation and vote of thanks followed (accompanied by a glass of wine) where we enjoyed viewing hilarious pictures of them in a ‘This is your life’ style trip down memory lane.

Admission of Choristers

Congratulations to Annabelle and Cait who were admitted to the choir as full choristers, at the 10am service, where they were presented with their surplices. We hope they enjoy singing with us for many years. They have certainly made a superb start to their singing careers as they both participated fully singing services at Llandaff Cathedral this summer.
RSCM Bath Residential Choral Course
23-29 August 2010
Two of our senior choristers Laura and Andrew attended the Bath Choral Course this summer, directed by Geoff Weaver. Both returned with glowing reports, having enjoyed the experience of singing in the school Chapel and Bath Abbey. Andrew was asked to do a reading and Laura was selected to sing a duet in Bath Abbey. They were also given the opportunity to try new skills including a choral directing workshop.
GCSE exam success

Congratulations to Charlotte for achieving 12 GCSE’s (including 3A* and 7A grades) at the same time as maintaining exemplary 88% attendance of the choir. Very well done!
Llandaff Cathedral Visit
21/22 August 2010
The Choir, supported by members of our congregation enjoyed a wonderful weekend of singing, fun, friendship and fellowship in the magnificent Cathedral at Llandaff. It was a joy to sing in such a fantastic acoustic accompanied by their amazing new Nicholson organ. The thrill of singing music by Tallis, Faure, Wood, Stanford and Brewer was a unique and at times deeply moving experience, and one which we will all treasure for a long time.
A-level exam success

Congratulations to Luke, Laura and Sian on their recent A-Level exam successes. They have all achieved places to continue their education in their chosen subjects. Luke will be studying Philosophy and Ethics at Gloucestershire University, Laura is going to study Floristry at Lackham College and Sian Radiography at Canterbury University. We wish them all much success in the future, and will bid them farewell at the Chorister Leavers’ Service at 6pm on Sunday 5th September.

Annual Choir BBQ

With fabulous weather and a marvellous spread of food, our generous hosts and their sous chefs excelled themselves at this year’s Choir BBQ. An extremely enjoyable time was had by over 60 guests, made up of choristers and their families, our esteemed organists and clergy. Fuelled by delicious food, numerous puddings and our thirst quenched, we enjoyed singing music by Brewer and Wood at our Patronal Festival that evening.
ABRSM Music exam success

Congratulations to Sian for achieving her Grade 5 Theory, Kathryn her Grade 8 Singing with Merit and Grade 5 Piano, and Luke his Grade 8 Singing with Merit. Luke managed this excellent result at the same time as taking his A-Levels, passing his Gold Award and his Grade 8 Flute - a fine example of good time management skills learnt through being a chorister!

At recent RSCM Award examinations, Georgia H achieved her Dean’s Award with Merit, Andrew his Bishop’s Award with Merit (singing tenor) and Charlotte H a Bishop’s Award with Distinction. Charlotte now holds the record for the highest mark achieved by a St Lawrence Chorister at Bishop’s Award Level. Very many congratulations for this extremely good set of results.

Confirmation Service at St Lawrence Church

We welcome two new probationers Cait and Annabelle to the front row. Annabelle is the youngest probationer we have ever had at just six years old. They have both made an excellent start and we hope they enjoy singing with us.
Diocesan Festival at Gloucester Cathedral

Congratulations to Laura and Charlotte who were formally presented with their Bishop’s and Dean’s Awards at this year’s ceremony. Members of the choir were there to support them and enjoyed singing music by Vierne and Stanford in the wonderful acoustic of Gloucester Cathedral, directed by Adrian Partington.
